During an eye test, your eye doctor will use a chart of letters to measure how well you see objects at least 20 feet away. This is called distance visual acuity testing.

The classic example of an eye chart is the Snellen eye chart, developed by Dutch eye doctor Hermann Snellen in the 1860s. There are many variations of the Snellen eye chart, but in general they show 11 rows of capital letters. The top row typically contains just one letter . The other rows contain letters that are progressively smaller in size, with more letters per line.

During an eye exam, your eye doctor will ask you to find the smallest line of text letters that you can make out, and ask you to read it. If you can read the bottom row of letters, your visual acuity is very good.
What Does The Dmv Eye Chart Look Like
Most DMV vision tests include some form of a Snellen eye chart.
How a Snellen chart and a “tumbling E” chart might look at your eye doctor’s office.
If you’ve ever had an eye exam, you might be familiar with these charts. They have one big letter at the top and several rows of gradually smaller letters below.
A DMV employee will ask you to read certain rows to find out how well you can recognize the characters on the chart. They can measure the sharpness of your eyesight based on the smallest row of letters you can read.
You’re allowed to wear your glasses or contact lenses during this part of the eye test. But only wear them at the DMV if you need to wear them while you’re driving too. The state will place a restriction on your license that requires you to wear your prescription lenses any time you’re behind the wheel.

If you have difficulty reading the eye chart, you may be asked to complete additional distance vision tests on a testing machine.
Some states also require you to complete a visual field test, which is used to check for peripheral vision loss. During a visual field exam, you’ll look straight ahead and watch for lights to the sides of your central field of view.
You may also need to complete a short color blindness test.
Like the measurements of your visual sharpness, different states also have different requirements for peripheral and color vision.
The Change From 20/20 Vision To 6/6 Vision
In order to measure your distance vision, optician/ eye doctors compare your vision with that of a person with normal acuity. Previously, the normal vision was known as a 20/20 vision. However, it is now referred to as a 6/6 vision. The lines in a Snellen chart are arranged in way that the lines become smaller as you keep looking further down.
Exhibiting how far you are far from the chart, the first number of your visual acuity measurement is generally 6 meters or twenty feet. The second number shows the distance from the chart at which someone with a normal vision would see the chart. This means that you see at 6 meters what a person with normal vision can see from a distance of 12 meters if you have a 6/12 vision. In simple terms, a 6/12 vision means that your vision is half of normal. By testing your vision, opticians determine whether or not you need glasses or contacts.

What 20/20 Vision In An Eye Test Means
The standard placement of the chart on a wall in the U.S is twenty feet away from a persons vision. Unfortunately, the offices of most opticians/eye doctors in the U.S are not twenty feet long. This is the reason you find the charts hanging behind the chair of the patient in most optician offices in the U.S. In such offices, mirrors are used to simulate a distance of twenty feet.
Considered as normal vision, 20/20 vision means that you can read from twenty feet away a letter people with normal vision are able read from a similar distance. Charts are configured in many different ways. However, your vision is considered 20/200 if you can read the big E at the top but none of the letters below that.
A 20/200 vision means that you can read from a distance of twenty feet letter that people with normal acuity can read from a distance of 200 feet. In short, your visual acuity is poor if you have a 20/200 vision. In fact, if your visual acuity is 20/200 or worse, youre considered as legally blind in the United States. Unless your best-corrected visual acuity is 20/40, you wont be able to get a drivers license in most U.S states.
Generally, fourth from the bottom is where you will find the 20/20 line of letters. 20/15, 20/10 and 20/5 are below the 20/20 line of letters on the chart. Although it is rare, the better visual acuity that any person can have is an acuity of 20/5 or better.
What Is The 20/20 Line On An Eye Chart
It seems like the answer should be straightforward, but the 20/20 line on an eye chart may vary. A standard Snellen eye chart example used by the American Academy of Ophthalmology puts 20/20 at Line 7, which is read by about 35% of all adults without correction. Be sure to ask your eye care professional which line on the chart you’re using represents 20/20 vision.

Tumbling E Chart Is Often Used As A Substitute For Snellen Chart
There are situations when Snellen chart, the most commonly used chart for vision screening, cannot be used. For example, Snellen chart cannot be used to test the eye of a young child who doesnt know the alphabets or a shy person who is unwilling to read letters aloud. Also, the use of Snellen chart is avoided when the person being tested is illiterate or doesnt have the ability to recognize letters or read them aloud.
In the above-mentioned situations, the best thing any optician or eye doctor can do is use a Tumbling E chart. A chart with the same scale as the standard eye chart i.e. the Snellen chart, the Tumbling E chart contains only the capital letter E in different spatial orientations. When using the Tumbling E chart to test a persons vision, the optician or eye doctor asks the person being tested to use either hand to show which direction the fingers of the letters are pointing. According to some studies, the measurements of visual acuity achieved with Tumbling E chart as the same as those obtained from a Snellen char used during an eye test.
How To Read Eye Chart Results
The results of your acuity exam will help to diagnose the quality of your eyesight. Your vision results will be expressed as a fraction. Fractions are shown to the left of each row and identify how well you can see.
The expression of results, such as 20/40 vision or 20/25 vision, will depend on how far down you were able to read the lines on a specific chart.

What Do The Results Mean
That depends on the age of the person being tested. A 3- to 4-year-old should be able to read the 20/40 line, and a 5-year-old the 20/30 line. Older children and adults should be able to read the majority of letters on the 20/20 line.

Ok, so the point is that I don’t think eye test of optometrists really show your vision strength. I do believe that they are set up in an unnatural environment, in a setting your eyes will never have to deal with anything in real life.
But many of my customers have asked me how they can test their 20/20 vision, so here is a chart and the test:
Measure the length of the blue bar in centimeters. Step back from your screen as many feet as you measured centimeters, ie if it’s 5 cm long, step 5 feet back. Now check which line you can read.
The big “E” on the top is 20/200, he “T” & “B” 20/100.
The 2nd line is 20/50
The 3rd line is 20/40
The 4th line is 20/30
The 5th line is 20/20
The last line is 10/20
20/40 equals about -1 diopter, the limit for driving a car unrestricted .
20/200 supposedly equals -5 diopters.
So test your eyes, and see for yourself if your glasses might be too strong.

Why And How An Eye Test Is Performed
The Eye test or visual screening measures your ability to see at various distances. Generally, an eye test or screening is performed with the help of an eye chart. During a routine eye exam, the first thing an optician/eye doctor does is test the vision of the patient using this chart. First developed by Hermann Snellen, a Dutch ophthalmologist, the aforementioned chart sets a standard for what a person with a normal vision can see from twenty feet away. The chart has eleven lines of block letters and these letters decrease in size line by line.
The best way to find out whether or not you need glasses or contacts to improve your vision, the aforementioned chart is used during the initial screening phase of a routine eye exam. The test is generally performed in the office of the optician. However, there are some where the eye test may take place. This includes a vision-screening test at the local DMV for a drivers license.
Generally, the eye doctor or optician will determine your visual acuity by the smallest row of letters that you can see clearly. The side of the chart contains numbers that show how far a person with normal vision could be to read that line on the chart. For example, you need to be a distance of twenty feet to read something that a person with a normal vision could read from forty feet away if you can read the line labeled 20/40.

The Standard Eye Chart
The Snellen eye chart is made of letters used as “optotypes,” or symbols designed for vision testing.
This standard chart consists of 11 lines of block letters, beginning with a large single letter on the top row. The number of letters on each row increases moving from top to bottom.
The size of the letters progressively decreases, allowing for more letters on each subsequent line.
The traditional Snellen eye chart makes use of only the following letters: C, D, E, F, L, O, P, T, and Z.
What 20/20 Vision Means In An Eye Test

Eye charts can be configured in various ways, but generally, if during an eye test you can read the big E at the top but none of the letters lower than that, your visual acuity is considered to be 20/200. That means you can read at 20 feet a letter that a person with normal vision can read at a distance of 200 feet. So 20/200 visual acuity is very poor roughly 10 times worse than normal eyesight.
In some countries, visual acuity measurements are expressed in meters rather than feet. In such cases, the normal testing distance is 6 meters, and a visual acuity result of 6/6 is comparable to visula acuity of 20/20 measured in feet.

What Are The Minimum Eyesight Requirements To Get A Driver’s License
Minimum vision requirements for driving vary by state.
Remember, the lower the second number is, the sharper your vision. 20/40 is better than 20/60, 20/20 is better than 20/40, and 20/15 is even better than 20/20.
For example, in California, you need to meet these requirements to get a standard, non-commercial driver’s license:
20/40 or better in one eye and 20/70 or better in the other eye
20/40 or better with both eyes tested together
In Texas and New York, however, you’ll only need to have 20/70 vision in the better eye. However, someone with 20/70 vision in Texas may receive a restriction on their license that only allows them to drive during the day at speeds of 45 miles per hour or less.
These restrictions are common in other states too.
As another example, Florida applicants can:
Receive an unrestricted license with 20/40 vision.
Receive a restricted license with 20/70 vision in one eye and at least 20/100 vision in the other eye.
Again, remember that you can wear your corrective lenses if you need to, no matter which state you live in.
DMV vision requirements change all the time, so make sure to check with your state’s driver’s license office for up-to-date information before you go in.
The Limitations Of The Chart

Like every other thing, the printable eye chart has limitations. Following are some of the limitations of the chart:
- The chart can be used to measure visual acuity only
- The chart does not measure your color perception, depth perception, peripheral vision, or the ability to apprehend contrast
- The chart does not measure things related to the health of your eyes such as glaucoma or eye fluid pressure
Now that we know the limitations of the charts used for eye testing, lets take a look at an important development related to eye testing that has taken place in the not so distant past.
